Chapter 1 3

April hoped they had gotten all of the awkward pretenses out of the way during their first night together, but it didn’t seem to be the case. In fact, it seemed to be worse now. They stood across each other on either sides of the bed, April scratching her neck and Danny courteously waiting for April to make the first move.

Still, she felt nervous. She didn’t know why she was nervous, all she knew was that she felt nervous. Maybe it was because she didn’t know so much about Danny the first night as she did now. She wasn’t so enamored. And she certainly wasn’t as worried about what she looked like in the early hours of the morning. Did she snore? Slobber? Did her eyes look puffy? She knew she was no model, not even after hours applying makeup in the bathroom. What kind of terror did she look like after a fitful night of rolling around against the cotton sheets?

An image flicked through her mind. Them—she and Danny—grabbing fistfuls of the sheets as they rolled around, naked, Danny’s muscular arms wrapping around her neck, pulling her closer. She could practically feel the weight of Danny on top of her, the heat of her body in sharp contrast to the cold outside. She tried to remember the last time she pictured being with someone like this, the last time she craved this closeness. It had been years, literally years since she’d felt this way about a physically tangible person. She’d never been with a woman before either, though she craved it so, and the thrill of the unknown rushed straight down to her core. The physical distance between her and Danny felt like an affront; she wanted more than anything to close that gap but her body stayed still — tense and alert.

“April? You okay?”

“Yes—I’m fine. Sorry,” she chuckled, dropping her head. “Just wondering when the last time I washed these sheets was.”

April cringed inwardly and wondered what in the hell compelled her to admit such a thing. Danny, seemingly unfazed, pulled the comforter back and sat atop the bed. “Then I guess I can’t make ‘em any dirtier. I was feeling a little guilty about it earlier, hence the hesitation.”

Her words rolled out smoothly, followed by a knowing smirk. The proximity, the lingering smell of Danny’s hair, the crooked grin, the way she lay there with her legs flopped open and comfortable... April simply couldn’t stop the next words that rolled out of her mouth, “Are you flirting with me?

Danny sharply sucked in air between her teeth. “Guess you do know when to call a spade a spade.”

“I’m no good at playing cards, remember?” she quipped.

“I think you’re doing just fine now,” Danny answered, still smiling that adorable smile. When April didn’t answer or move to join her, a playful scowl appeared on her face. “You gonna leave me hanging here, or what?”

“Well…I guess that’d be pretty rude.”

“The rudest,” Danny teased.

April climbed in the bed then,
